SwipyCleanHow to free up disk space on Windows
By the SwipyClean project · Updated October 4, 2026
A full drive does not always mean you have junk to delete. It may be a large game, a video library or an app you still use. Identify the cause before running cleanup, and keep a backup of important files.
1. Find where the space went
Open Windows Settings and look for Storage under System. Check the categories before choosing a fix. If installed apps dominate, removing an unused game may help more than clearing small caches. If photos or videos dominate, consider a backed-up move to another drive rather than deletion.
2. Review temporary files, not entire folders
Windows includes cleanup tools. On Windows 11, Cleanup recommendations under Storage shows candidates to review. Only select categories you understand. Be especially careful with Downloads, Recycle Bin and previous Windows installations: they can contain files or rollback data you may still need.
Do not manually empty unfamiliar Windows folders. Deleting application data indiscriminately can remove settings or break software. If a file is in use, close the relevant app rather than forcing deletion.
3. Use SwipyClean for a focused review
- Install SwipyClean from Microsoft Store and run Smart Scan.
- Review the detected categories in Custom Clean. Compare their sizes and leave anything uncertain unselected.
- Confirm the selected cleanup, then inspect the result. Files currently in use may remain.
SwipyClean keeps its analysis on your device and excludes personal documents and Downloads from automatic cleanup. Its Disk & Duplicates tool can help you investigate selected folders, but a matching file is not automatically safe to remove: applications and backups may need separate copies.
4. Know when cleanup is not the answer
If there is little removable data, repeated scans will not create more space. Review unused applications, move backed-up media or consider more storage. Cleaning caches can also make the next app launch slower while they rebuild. SwipyClean is not a hardware repair tool or antivirus.
